AT&T Weekend Preview: January 24-26

By Andrea Prusik for ArmoryTrack.com

(23-Jan) – The New Balance Games headline this weekend’s events at The New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory. With more than 6,000 competitors ranging from high school to professional levels, the New Balance Games is one of the largest competitions The Armory hosts all year long.

Day one of the New Balance Games begins on Friday at 4:45pm. Most of Friday evening’s competition will consist of freshman, sophomore, novice, and middle school level events.

Competition resumes at 9:00am on Saturday with both high school varsity and professional level events. A free live webcast will be available on ArmoryTrack.com from 1:00pm to 4:00pm EST.

Among those competing in the Professional portion of Saturday's meet are a number of Olympic medalists and World Championships finalists. Will Claye, Morgan Uceny, Duane Solomon, and Lucy van Dalen, as well as rising stars Ajee' Wilson and indoor 600 meter American record holder Erik Sowinski are among those taking center stage at The Armory.

Claye will be making his Armory debut in the triple jump. An Olympic silver medalist in the event, Clay aims to take down The Armory record and post the furthest triple jump performance for 2014.

“I am definitely capable,” said Claye. “I never put limits on myself.”

Solomon and Sowinski will face off in the elite men’s 600 meter run. The two have developed a friendly rivalry after a close finish in last year’s NYRR Millrose Games, where the underdog Sowinski defeated Solomon and set the current indoor American Record of 1:15.61.

“The Armory is a very special place to me because it’s where my professional career kicked off,” said Sowinski, who burst onto the international running scene after his standout race last year.

“Hopefully [Erik and I] can take down another record and put on a good show for the fans and the people,” said Solomon.

High school athletes can expect a high level of competition between Friday and Saturday. The girls and boys invitational mile will surely be a showcase event, as the winner of each race will automatically qualify for February 15's NYRR Millrose Games

The New York University Team Challenge will also be held at The Armory this weekend. This collegiate invitational is scheduled to take place from 11:30am to 4:00 pm on Friday, January 24.

The weekend concludes on Sunday with local sectional and county championship meets. CHSAA Brooklyn Queens Sectionals, CHSAA New York Sectionals, and Passaic County Sectionals are all scheduled for Sunday, January 26.
